Dr. Andrew Weil has been a huge influence in bringing attention to Integrative Medicine in the US.
Recently I was reading the October 2014 Natural Awakening magazine, and he was asked, “What influence can the public have in supporting a shift” ?
Personally, I have been sitting with this question myself for quite a while. The allopathic part of medicine is so helpful and supportive in some ways, but sorely missing in regards to the connection to humanity as whole beings. It feels like one goes to a physician and is slotted a 15 minute appointment, and on to the next patient. Insurance companies don’t compensate doctors for listening to a complete history for an hour. Not to mention- have you noticed how medications are handed out a lot easier than a prescription for massage or acupuncture. They are covered by insurance easier, that’s for sure. I am not pointing my finger at physicians, as they are having to fit into something that only partially works. What I am suggesting is that the system needs to be restructured.
For me, it is nice to hear a medical doctor interested in changing the healthcare system. However, change is not going to have to be only coming from people like him. It’s up to us as patients, but more fundamentally as full human beings to create this shift.
Dr. Weil wrote, “Our dysfunction healthcare system is generating rivers of money flowing into very few pockets. Those are the pockets of big pharmaceutical companies, medical devices manufactures and big insurers;interests that control legislators. So, I don’t think any real change is going to come from the government.”

Integrative Medicine
If you would like to see changes, I’d invite you to research alternative and integrative therapies. Help make connections between these fields and western medicine. We need rainbow bridges to help bring the best qualities of all the various health protocols together. This requires a grassroots movement. I don’t always agree with all of Dr. Weil’s assessments on all things, but he does have a clear vision in bringing this about. We need to all put away the need for there only being one method to heal…instead let’s come together to create a new system that addresses holism and quality of life.
Right now, we have more people living longer, less doctors to meet their needs. Let’s work together and write to our government, but more than that… get involved and support the wellness programs that help you feel healthier and happier. Find out more about physicians who believe in integrative and functional medicine. You deserve that!

Structural Integration by Ida Rolf, is not the most mild type of bodywork.
It’s not meant to be…

Evolution
The ten sessions are intended to help clients to find better alignment in relationship to gravity. Not only in standing or quiet poses, but also in movement. The idea is to help people find more fluidity, flexibility and range of motion through effective touch and thorough manipulation.
One thing that is important to address, is that this type of work often gets labeled as being uncomfortable. With Ida Rolf’s work- in most cases, as pain is sometimes encountered and touched, clients will feel things that have been avoided. It’s natural for people to compensate when they have injuries or emotional patterns holding them out of alignment. As such, as things open, deeper sensations do occur. However, if a professional and respectful dialogue is kept, the session can weather the storm with proper care and efficient contact. With healthy touch, the work can go slowly at the client’s rate and comfort level. During and after the sessions, clients will often be surprised at how they can feel grounded into their bodies and the earth both energetically and physically in a whole new way.
One of the biggest considerations when deciding if Structural Integration is right for you, is to ask yourself if you are looking for a pleasurable massage session or a more long-term and holistic approach. Some clients enjoy light touch effleurage massage. It can feel warm, invigorating and healing. On the opposite side of the spectrum though, the Ida Rolf Structural Integration type of work focuses on the ability to work deeper without working harder. A good Structural Integration Therapist will apply pressure to touch into the different levels of the fascial web to help you unwind and lengthen dysfunctional patterns. The fascia softens and hydrates allowing time to awaken and integrate.
Without question, at Lighten Up Therapies, our goal is to help you to achieve your goals for your health and wellbeing.

Perhaps Not- Visceral organs are not usually a commonly discussed subject, unless something feels wrong or a diagnosis states as such.
So I’d like to bring this subject up for common discussion so that the general public has a better basic understanding of organ dynamics. Visceral Manipulation, a specialized hands-on massage modality includes techniques that have moved us into the forefront of significant health improvement to affected organs and those to which it relates in a positive direction. With this said, visceral motion has become an interest of mine, and I hope this will open more minds to the benefits of this work.
My favorite Read: Osteopathic concepts discussed in Jean-Pierre Barral’s book Visceral Manipulation give us a whole new outlook on health and wellbeing by teaching us to listen and address visceral restrictions by supporting self-correction within the appropriate system. This book dives into testing and resolving adhesions and fixation so that the body can function more optimally.
Life is movement, and the structures in our bodies need to flow in their organic waves internally if to function properly. The two movements that I learned about and work with are:
1. Mobility- During the movement of diaphragmatic motion, the diaphragm drops with inhalation. The organs in that area operate in multiple planes, each with dynamic basic patterns. Each organ has its own unique way it responds and relates. The heart and cardiac motion dance with the the the other systems as well. Blood rushing and circulating nourish and stir. And not forgetting digestion- peristalsis sends its powerful waves throughout the visceral container along with the Craniosacral Motion and such. With all these systems working together, the organs, when healthy move in optimal patterns to support the whole body. Adhesions can lesson functioning.
2. Motility- These are the intrinsic movements that are independent for each organ. With motility, the axis and directions are created from the beginning of development. There are two phases of motility: 1. expire and 2. inspire. This is a much more quiet type of movement that deserves more mindful attention to evaluate the axis and amplitude. When examining motility, one begins by listening to pairs of organs with a very light touch.
Let’s take one organ briefly into account. The example, the liver which is the largest digestive organ, can be helped to increase energy. Mobility and motility testing can give show indications of restrictions which affect not only the liver itself, but most likely the other organs nearby.

Visceral Manipulation
By flushing out the liver, metabolism can improve and one feels more vitality.
Usually Visceral Manipulation can be inserted into your regular massage routine. A normal session for one organ pair and related issues take about 20 minutes or so.
At Lighten Up Therapies, I like to integrate some of this work into the Craniosacral Sessions as they both seem to work hand in hand together. They both require a “listening” and supportive measures to help the body to self heal.

Feeling tight doesn’t necessarily come from muscular signals.
In fact, most massage therapists and bodyworkers who are experienced with years of practice will tell you that most of contraction comes from feeling connective tissue that is tight, adhered or twisted in the body. The connective tissue, being the material that holds everything together through its wrapping web, supports all the muscles, bones, and viscera down to the cellular level. It is responsible for length and freedom in the body or on the other side of the fence- containment and inflexibility. Feeling tight is a signal that your body needs attention. When aligned with healthier functioning in regards to gravity, Structural Integration can improve the quality of life quite a bit.
The connective tissue, called fascia, when in its optimal condition, is key to helping you to live a healthy life style as well as supporting a more centered, easily functioning way of Being.

Tight? Free your body into a more flowing, better organized structure.
Structural Integration, whose foundation is based on the work of Dr. Ida Rolf, is founded on a 10 series where a massage therapist will work with the whole body based on a formula of moving from superficial sleeve work down into the deeper core as each session progresses. The approach is unique in each session with the recipe, and also determined by how your body speaks to the practitioner.
The work can be done with a lighter touch, or a more deep penetrating version of Structural Integration.
What I have found through the years, it that for the best results, the bodyworker needs to listen to the body, but also to the verbal dialogue if something feels uncomfortable. Sometimes patterns need to be rustled a bit, and at other times, the body release much more when it loses its need to defend or fight against the intrusion. In the long run, the best work is something that can be integrated, and that means the giver and receiver are in a peaceful relationship during the session.
There are a few well known schools for Structural Integration. As the work evolves, new techniques and different approaches develop. If you are looking for the best local SI practitioner, you can look up schools such as the Rolf Institute or the Guild, but what is most important is that you resonate with the practitioner who will hold space for you release and open up to your fullest potential. Interview- get your questions answered. After all, this is something that can change your life for the better when lying down into the right hands!

Disappointment and It’s Consequences
Are you one of those people that always seems to be unhappy about something?
You plan something and work hard, but the end result never seems to be what you hoped for.
Living in the cycle of disappointment isn’t the easiest road. Every time your creative force is put into action, it gets caught up in the dream. The thoughts, the energy in your actions- is actively set into motion through your beliefs and the effort you put in to build upon them.
The excitement is palpable. You can breath it, smell it, touch it if you dare. You have a new reason to get up and live for. You find meaning in life. Why not go after the “dream”?
Yet does your final product ever end up looking how you planned?
Have you ever taken time to notice what is permanent and what is not? As you look into the world in which you live, find one thing that remains the same forever. Is that possible? Have you yet realized that change is always happening here on earth.
The moment you reach out your hand and try to grasp something, the form or the object has already transformed into something new. Observation in itself brings change to that which is being observed. That is the way here on earth as perceived by human beings. When you look carefully, each supposed structure has its own unfolding, and its own relationship to everything else. And until we realize that we are all the center of the universe- living and pulsing, interconnected and empty in the void as One Being, we will experience the cycles of life and death and all that goes with it. Each point a living organism reaching, connecting, withdrawing, nothingness… going through its different cycles like a spiral.
In these cycles of creativity, for something to be real and to last eternally all expectations need to be dropped. The dream needs to be broken. It’s necessary to rip yourself apart from the necessity to be adhered to something that is only meant to be a momentary human experience. It’s not reality of all things. How often does one witness, the whole situation? Indeed, your dreams are only fragments of the truth.
Suffering is when we try to cling onto something that will never stay the same and in fact is only an illusion. The only way to break the cycle of disappointment is to acknowledge what is in the moment as something whole and complete. Explore the moment fully with the senses and your feeling body. Mindfulness is a good entry way into this state of being. Slow down and find the gratitude that does live inside of you for what is showing up here on earth. Awakening is a process of shattering the dream and finding the truth of what is real.
Next time you find yourself feeling disappointment, use a whole new fresh approach to your life. Count your blessings even if this only the first act of your personal paradigm shift. Find even the smallest speck of light and re-connect from there. Bring it into you and outside of you. Bathe in the light. Spread the light. Be generous. Give to the places where you least want to give. Stop holding back. Open your arms and spread them wide. Be vulnerable. Open up. Embrace the Universe for what it is… as vulnerable as that may feel. Feelings of sadness and grief may show up. You may end up feeling angry or upset.
But my friends, this is how suffering ends…
Disappointment can only rule your life is you cling to it. It dissolves as we unleash the beliefs we hold about ourselves and others, and let go of our future expectation.
There is so much to look for forward in today. But it will never quite be what you imagined. Thank God for the mystery!

Letting go of your Dreams to Live in the Truth.

Barbara Brennan’s School is situated in the South of Florida.
It moved there many years ago because Barbara Brennan wanted to find a location where Brennan Healing Science® could be learned in a college environment. It was her dream to make this work mainstream and used in a professional manner.
Since that time, many people from around the world have continued to attend, making this a Unique Environment to learn about Energy Dynamics and various Healing techniques. The program involves a four year commitment to graduate with the fundamentals of Brennan Healing Science® used as its foundation. The curriculum is all encompassing and is set up to help people with personal evolution as well as in helping people to bring healing into their lives, their careers, and in service to the world.

Brennan Professional Healers
What is gained from this experience is so much more than you could ever imagine. The many thousands of students who graduated from the school can attest to this. From the moment you enter into the beautiful vessel of Light called the Barbara Brennan School, you can count on being held and supported in a healing and growing container to evolve into the best you can be. The community is close-knit, and immediately one feels like part of the family and connected to the greater whole… from the beginning students from over 35 years ago, to the students there now, studying and participating in this program is only improved from one generation to the next. There is a common thread that all the students live with in their commitment to complete their personal and spiritual work that is rarely found elsewhere. This community of the Sacred Human Heart is something that will touch you in the deepest places.
Beyond the Awakening Skills and other changes one experiences, the students also learn to work with clients. This begins with first year students learning how to ground and explore their inner landscapes while being in contact with their clients. It is a good time to learn more about the Self, belief systems, but also how to hold color vibrations, and hold the lower levels of the fields. It is a wonderful time to strengthen the core through nourishment and nurture and self-inquiry. The second year takes the student even deeper. This is the year that relationships become key in the exploration process. For those interested in astral work, this is an adventure. Some of the skills that are learned are basic spine cleaning, working with the astral realm and diving through the darkness, learning to come back through with even more light. It can be a bit of a roller coaster, but well worth the ride. The third year feels more spiritual as the student learns to inquire into their relationship in the higher levels and to God. Authority issues are often questioned and encountered as the curriculum supports Surrendering into the Divine. It’s a very special year because of the beauty and light that shines through as one begins to touch deeper into Spirit. The fourth and final of the basic four year program includes writing a Case Review of a specific Client, and also writing a paper of how to bring your unique blend of Healing into the World. Other skills such as “hara” and Core Star® are also learned to help bring alignment and the Four Dimensions of the Physical, Astral, Hara, and Core Essence into integration in ones life.
Personally, I felt so inclined that I continued to go further with the BIP program to Supervise Students and Groups, and the ASED program which prepared me to teach. I was honored to teach the third year as a faculty member, and am forever grateful to have to received and also shared the teachings of this work. One of my favorite things to do is guide clients to find their own truth and light as they progress through the years at BBSH.
I know that people have questions about energy healing. Many of us have had experiences of Higher Sense of Perception where we perceive more than what most do with the naked eye. Most children have the abilities to sense beyond, but are taught to discount theses experiences. But something inside that wants to awaken keeps sending sparks of light out to remind us that we are much more than we ever imagined. The School is helpful for people who have experienced a kernel of the truth. It is a container of Love and Kindness with expertly trained people to pass on the skills needed to be a successful healer. And let’s face it- the world needs more healing!
So if you have any questions- or are wanting to do a session either in person or via phone/Skype, call Sharon Hartnett LMT for a session to help you find your way back to Grace. Telephone number is (614) 372-6598 in Columbus, Ohio.

Are you sure that you want to change your life?
Change means actually allowing habits to be broken. Are you up for the challenge?
Progress requires a price to pay, and you have have the power to change your thinking to volunteer for freedom. Your evolution is counting on your commitment.

Press the Blue Button for Change!
The majority of us face different places where we are stuck in our lives… yet the possibilities or awareness of positive change, indeed, is already resting in the Unknown, waiting to blossom and awaken the depths of your soul. But have you lost your connection to the creative process? Has joy and vitality escaped you recently? Are you ready to commit to breaking habits that have been holding you back?
Whether your creative amnesia falls under the categories of your personal inner landscape, business successes, health or even just learning how to relax and find quiet, those who feel stuck have become too accustomed to a certain sense of functioning whether it is healthy or not. We live in a world that we have created based on certain choices from a cellular level to the global consciousness in which we have grown and hopefully evolved somewhat. And being human, that often means limited beliefs. So- fortunate are we to be living in the matrix of our own reality which is always ready to expand and be taken to the next level, with each experience. Change is just a shift away.
Feeling stuck is an indication of stagnation. It can show up physically, emotionally, in our belief systems, our heart connections or spiritually. Indeed, it may take some time to even discover that we are have lost fluidity until discomfort or pain reminds us that something is out of balance. But rest assured, that we can find a way to wake up in order to be more proactive in bringing ourselves back into the unity.
So how does one heal areas in life where there feels to be no movement?
- The first thing is to become mindful of what is working in your life and what isn’t. In order to do this, it is important to be curious whether your thoughts are limiting you. Write down your stressful beliefs and begin to question the truths and the lies you tell yourself and others. You may not believe that you lie, but strategies and information has been taught to you that is not true. You have learned to believe these untruths. It is only in asking while experiencing discomfort that you can open to a new point of view. Connection to the whole is key.
- Bring awareness to sensations in your body that can offer vital information that can lead you back to your true essence. Listen to these subtle vibrations and trust their message. Ask your body to complete and cycles that are blocked from completion. Move with the rhythms of your body from the micro level to the large extended possible lengths.
- Be attentive to the thought that everything is temporary. Allow yourself to look at nature and remember the cycles of God’s creation here on earth. When nature’s form is through, it is finished and transforms into something new. One only needs to look at the butterfly to experience transformation. However, this change shows up everywhere and in everything. Birth and death may seem like reality, but something deeper than that is at play. Something that is whole and complete.
- Ask for help. I know this sounds easy, but often people don’t like to ask. If your body hurts, find a massage therapist or gym coach, if you are feeling emotionally stuck- find a psychotherapist, if you feel lonely-reach out to family and friends, if you feel disconnected to God- begin to meditate and pray. Remember at least one moment when everything felt like love and wholeness and begin to let go of everything that stands in the way of that connection. Ask for the Higher Self to guide you through your difficulties.
- Many people say it is the Will that takes you across the barriers. But the will itself is just another thought with some burst of energy behind it. If you want to change, it is necessary to be vulnerable and to feel deeply. Our defenses or strategies keep us stuck, and those need to be surrendered for real change.
If you want to experience progress in your life… self-discovery is essential. It all begins with you and your commitment to Self. When you can direct your positive intention inward and open up to miracles, life will show you want you have been longing for. Stay on track… and with others. We are all in this together.
Choose Freedom by acknowledging the truth in all things.
