What Should I Expect in a Craniosacral Therapy Session?

Craniosacral Therapy in Columbus, Ohio

If you’re curious about craniosacral therapy in Columbus, Ohio, you have come to the right place.  Many people are looking for natural and organic ways to feel better in their bodies—and craniosacral therapy (CST) offers a deeply relaxing and effective option.  Some of the things that you can expect to have in a professional space:

A Neutral and Compassionate Space

This creates a safe therapeutic relationship with your Craniosacral Therapist—one that is compassionate, neutral, and professional.

Especially when fear is being held or recycled in the body, having a calm and peaceful therapeutic space and presence can help the nervous system settle. This sense of safety supports the mind in letting go and allows the body to begin healing more deeply.

A Gentle Yet Deep Experience

Craniosacral therapy uses very light touch to release tension in the nervous system. The body responds well because the approach is so gentle—it doesn’t resist the change, it welcomes it. This allows the healing to ripple through all systems in the body: muscular, skeletal, digestive, and emotional.

Many clients report feeling calm, centered, and more connected after just one session.

What Happens in a Session?

Sessions are typically 60–90 minutes, depending on the therapist. You’ll lie fully clothed on a comfortable treatment table. The practitioner uses gentle hand placements to encourage the release of restrictions and integration in the tissues, and to hold a space for embodied healing.

Because the body holds cellular memory, it’s not uncommon for emotions, images, or old thoughts to arise during or after a session. This is part of the body’s natural healing process.  You can check into Somatoemotional Release to find out more.

Choosing the Right Craniosacral Therapist Matters

Not all craniosacral therapy is the same. Every practitioner brings a different level of training, experience, and personal approach to the table. Some may weave craniosacral work into other bodywork modalities, while others have made it the core of their practice through years of advanced study.

Before booking a session, take time to learn about a therapist’s background. Ask about their certifications, where they trained, and how long they’ve been practicing. For example, practitioners certified through the Upledger Institute have completed extensive hands-on education rooted in the foundational principles of this gentle, powerful work.

Because this is such subtle and deeply transformative therapy, finding the right match can make all the difference. Sometimes that means traveling a bit farther to work with someone whose approach truly resonates with your needs.

Your healing journey is personal—choose a therapist who brings presence, skill, and heart to the table.

Feel Better in Your Body

Clients often seek craniosacral therapy for chronic pain, stress, trauma, or simply a desire to feel more at ease. Over time, CST helps you feel more grounded, resilient, and balanced.

Upledger: How to Find the Most Qualified Craniosacral Therapist

Upledger: How to Find the Most Qualified Craniosacral Therapist

Dr. John Upledger

Upledger Craniosacral Therapy Near Me

Columbus Craniosacral Therapist:  Sharon Hartnett CST Diplomate Certified.

In 2003, I was drawn to an Upledger Craniosacral Therapy (CST) class in Washington DC. The class was huge. The information was vast and based on the anatomy, physiology of the Craniosacral System which I knew next to nothing about except for briefly skimming over the basics.

However, I was drawn to learning CST because while I was already a healer, Structural Integration Therapist,Hakomi practitioner, and massage therapist, I had visited an advanced Upledger Craniosacral Therapist-Suzanne Herberts- whose work I found to be amazingly profound, and transformational.  So off I went to learn to study Dr. John’s work.

The first. class taught me the foundational 10 step protocol and was the first of many classes on a life long journey. I won’t lie, and tell you that it was easy. Not many schools teach the work of Craniosacral Therapy, nor have many people ever heard of it unless they are “in the know”.  There is a lot to learn and you have to enjoy learning the extensive anatomy of the body to become highly effective and specific in the CST work.  Yet when you fall in love and feel passionate about something, you step into it and immerse. At least I do anyway.

Over many years, I have continued to study this work. It is an ongoing exploration. The human body is our sacred vessel in which we live, and there is great wonder in dialoguing with each person, and what lives within. While its foundation is clear, there are many ways to weave in and out of the human body with intuition, expertise and understanding. With an open mind and healthy techniques, we can delve deep into the Inner Wisdom to unlock many healing capabilities.

In any case, when I looked at Craniosacral Schools, I simply decided that the Upledger Institute was the best around.  Dr. John Upledger had a wonderful reputation as being magically skillful, but also made the work available in a way that many people could learn and help others. If anything, I would say the biggest gift he brought to this world was making Craniosacral Therapy ubiquitous.  People across the world and over have studied and used his methodology and teachings to serve others.

About Dr. John Upledger and what makes his teaching stand out.

Dr. John Upledger’s approach to craniosacral therapy (CST) exels because of its unique blend of deep scientific understanding and a profound respect for the body’s natural ability to heal. What truly sets his teaching apart is the emphasis on listening to the body—something that goes beyond technique and into the realm of intuitive healing. Upledger believed that CST wasn’t just about manipulating the body, but rather about creating a nurturing environment for the body to heal itself.

He introduced an innovative perspective with his pioneering research, showing how the craniosacral system, which includes the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord, plays a crucial role in health and wellness. His work demonstrated that imbalances or restrictions in this system could affect the entire body, influencing both physical and emotional health.

What makes Dr. Upledger’s teachings so special is his deep belief in the therapist’s role as a guide or facilitator in the healing process, rather than someone who “fixes” the patient. He encouraged his students to embrace a gentle, hands-on approach while cultivating sensitivity and an open heart to connect with the body’s rhythms and energy.

In his workshops, he created an atmosphere of trust and openness, helping practitioners develop the skills to tune into the body’s subtle signals. His warm, approachable style made learning this powerful therapy accessible to so many, and his focus on self-awareness and self-care is at the core of his philosophy. For him, CST was more than a therapy—it was a way of being, a way of offering compassion, and a path to healing.

Many clients find Craniosacral Therapy to be deeply relaxing and effective in promoting overall well-being. Here’s how it can benefit you:

  1. Gentle and Relaxing: Craniosacral Therapy involves light touches on the head, neck, and spine, offering a calming experience that helps reduce stress and anxiety. It’s a peaceful way to feel deeply relaxed, both physically and mentally.

  2. Relieves Tension and Pain: Whether you’ve been dealing with headaches, neck pain, or chronic muscle tension, this therapy targets areas where stress and discomfort accumulate, providing relief without the need for intense manipulation.

  3. Improves Mobility: The therapy enhances the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid, which nourishes your brain and spinal cord. This can lead to improved flexibility and a sense of lightness in your body, helping you feel more mobile and free.

  4. Supports Healing of Injuries: If you’ve had physical trauma or injury, Craniosacral Therapy can support the healing process. It helps improve circulation and reduces inflammation, allowing your body to recover at its own pace.

  5. Balances Your Body and Mind: Beyond physical relief, many people report a sense of emotional balance and clarity after sessions. Craniosacral Therapy gently encourages harmony between your body and mind, supporting your emotional well-being.

  6. Personalized Care: Dr. Upledger’s approach focuses on listening to your body’s unique needs. Each session is tailored to you, creating a safe space where you can experience deep healing.

Obviously, I am a big believer in Dr. John Upledger’s Work.  The school is known for its high level teaching and it’s teaching staff being top notch.  More importantly though, I keep coming back to the love of connection, melding and evolving that comes out of this work.  It changes everything when a person is met, understood, tuned into, and appreciated with skill, touch and presence.  Being the therapist also is deeply rewarding.

For You

If you’re seeking a holistic and nurturing way to address physical discomfort or simply want to restore balance and peace to your life, Craniosacral Therapy could be the supportive therapy you’ve been looking for.

How to Revive Your Digestion Health: Discover Visceral Manipulation

How to Revive Your Digestion Health: Discover Visceral Manipulation

Are You Experiencing Digestion Issues?

No Relief For Digestion Issues?

There are many digestion conditions that affect adults, and children too. The American diet has changed dramatically over the years, and the human body was not meant to consume the food that is being sold at grocery stores anymore. Reading a label may help but we still have no idea exactly what is being put into our foods. Which chemicals are being added, how is it genetically altered, and how it is being processed is a mystery. So we have that. Our bodies are just not getting the best nutrition they need, and overloads of chemicals,  unhealthy bacteria and parasites can wreak havoc on our internal environment.

Another issue that causes problems in the digestive process is that the organs can lose their motion and motility from unhealthy diets, and also from trauma (like a car accident with a seatbelt pressing hard) or through habitual habits.  The positive response to this though is to find a Visceral Manipulation Therapist from the Barral Institute who use their specialized techniques to help release organs to be freed back into healthy motion.  With a healthy nudge or encouragment, things can start to turn back on.  A healthy organ is living, dialoguing, and sliding against other living things inside our bodies. Functionality of the different digestion organs can dramatically improve after just one session.  Movement is Life!

As a Craniosacral Therapist, I incorporate the Visceral Manipulation into sessions.  With so many people coming in with Gerd, IBS, chronic constipation or diarrhea  and such,  visceral manipulation can be a great resource for healing.  I also recommend seeing a naturopath or a functional physician to adddres the nutrition aspect of your healing journey. Each body is different based on genetics and life experience. You deserve have your body understood and your health issues addressed holistically.  You deserve to take the time to have your real needs met.

Visceral Manipulation is an excellent modality to help the digestion in the liver, the stomach, the pancreas and all the viscera in the abdominal area.  It’s also helful for women’s health issues in the pelvis and also the thoracic region and head too.

If you would like to learn more about Visceral Manipulation, contact the Barral Institute.  If you live in the Columbus , Ohio area, contact Sharon Hartnett CST-D to try a session!

Yes Craniosacral Therapy!

How can Craniosacral Therapy help you?

The best answer that I can think of is that you want to feel good again.  If you are feeling stressed, if your body is in pain, or if you have been in a terrible accident, Craniosacral Therapy can help.  I have treated people who have experienced great results who have come in with anxiety, Traumatic Brain Injury & Concussions, car accidents, TMJ,  back & neck pain, just to name a few conditions.  The major reason that I have success helping people as a Craniosacral Therapist is because I use a method that is so gentle, that the body welcomes the touch.  I don’t have to force my work through layers of fascia. Rather, my hands listen to what the body already knows  I trust that it can unwind painful patterns by using craniosacral techniques that are supportive and precise.  I believe we want to heal, and that having a compassionate presence helps move that process through naturally.  It feels to me like I hold a flexible yet centered point for my clients to re-organize around.  It works for me as a therapist, and it works for them as clients.

I have been practicing bodywork for 20 years, and Craniosacral Therapy since 2003.  During this time, I have studied and worked with advanced Craniosacral Therapy techniques, SomatoEmotional Release, and emphasized brain and spine related work in my work practice.  What I have witnessed at times, is nothing short of a miracle.  In 10 sessions, I have seen clients who have come in with fogginess, depression and pain get up and resume extraordinary lives.  Now I don’t guarantee this, but it is possible.  The people who have shown me the most success are those who are committed to their healing practice,  those who are open to change, and those who can quietly take in the work, and express deeper thoughts, feelings and sensations as they show up during the session.  This is because we are each whole.  And when the mind, body & spirit connecting get tangled up, they need to be sorted out to tap back into the whole essence of the individual.   When we connect to the deeper essence of life, great things can happen.

I don’t know that any one therapist is a Master in their own right.  It is the client that has the power to heal.  What you want to find in a Craniosacral Therapist is  someone who has faith that your own “Inner Wisdom” who can show you the way back to health and wellbeing.  As a Craniosacral Therapist, it is my job to use this model and all the techniques that I have learned to help you self-correct any dysfunctional patterns that show up.  As you let go, the healing has begun.

I trust the Central Nervous System to communicate all of it’s know how as we set the stage for deep release, better balance, more vitality, and emotional clearing if necessary.

If you looking for a Craniosacral Therapist, you can see my profile on www.Upledger.com.  Look for me in the Columbus, Ohio.  If you live elsewhere and you would like a reference, I’d be glad to help you sort through the website.  Craniosacral Therapy is a humble service.  We practice from a neutral place to help clients to find their own way.

Getting Clear about What You Want in Life

Getting Clear about What You Want in Life

You CAN get clear about what you want in life.

How?

What you need to do first is start by getting clear about your commitment to Clarity.  Set certain times aside for yourself to explore.  This can be done alone, or with a friend, healer or a therapist.  Self-discovery is a very interesting process. It begins by bringing your awareness to your thinking and how it affects you.  Cause and Effect.

Most of our thinking comes from our history and projections into the future.  What we believe about our stories can become very important to us.  And the filters that we now see the world through can be dimmed by repetitive belief systems.  By realizing how we identify with certain thinking patterns, we can change how we experience and create in the world.  Three keys to getting clearer about what matters to you:

  • Mindfulness is key for bringing awareness to thoughts that confuse and that block us from finding optimal value in our lives.  And it is in the quiet listening to our thoughts as they pass through, that we can navigate into the deeper silence.  Without the clutter, things are much closer to the heart and easier to navigate.  Into the “Now” place, life springs forth and life is more simple.
  • Being Curious makes space for new ideas and perspectives.  It’s like opening a door to see what’s next.
  • Experiencing means being with what is here right now in the moment.

Once the mind starts to quiet down.  Awareness can be experienced as more expansive.  We can step out of our normal living box. Perspective opens.  The bigger picture gives us an advantage to seeing things differently and with more clarity.  Experience and centeredness helps us to know what feels right for us.  It helps to define our relationship to the moment.

The mind and its consciousness is a larger field than just one person alone.

There are infinite possibilities.  But with healing relationships, we can investigate truth, and get more clear about who we are.  Our false identities dissolve and life feels more simple, and more restful.  Believe it-  when the mind opens, clarity is a relief.

Getting Clear by reaching outside of “normal” thinking patterns.Reach for the sky!
