Looking for A Craniosacral Therapist in the Columbus, Ohio area?

No Need to Look Further-

LaI’d like to welcome you into the World of Craniosacral Therapy This Fall.

You know, lots of people have not heard about Craniosacral Therapy. Although, it’s been around for a long time in some form or another- based on an Osteopathic Approach to manual Therapy.  So here we go to share the good news about CST!

The first osteopathic doctor was Andrew Taylor Still, who developed the osteopathic medical philosophy in 1874 and founded the first osteopathic medical school, the American School of Osteopathy (now A.T. Still University), in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892. His approach was based on the idea that the body’s structure is central to its ability to heal, focusing on the musculoskeletal system and preventive care.

There have been many physicians since that time who have learned and evolved this business of an ostepathic approach to healing.  The doctor who made a big impression on me as a Structural Integration Therapist years ago was Dr. John Upledger.

Dr. Upledger was recognized as an innovator and leading proponent in the investigation of new therapies. His development of CranioSacral Therapy in particular earned him an international reputation.  Dr. Upledger produced a protocol with fresh techniques which could be taught to anyone working hands on with people hoping to feel better. The Upledger Institute was created in 1985 and thousand and thousands of therapist have been offering this work ever since.

Personally, I have enjoyed doing as a somatic therapist over the last 30 uears Craniosacral Therapy and SI and Brennan healing sciencce.

I have melded all of my training into a listening of each person who comes into the office.  The primary intention is to discover what inside of you is ready to heal and how do I help to activate that with a gentle nudge and sacred holding. Most often this is done with Craniosacral Therapy as sthe primary modality.

What does a CST session look like?

CST is known for being very gentle and supporting the deeper intelligence of the body to self-correct, change and integrate.  My clients often come in once a week for a month or two, then shift to every other week, then to a month, eventually to once in a while to maintain.  It really depends on each individual and what is happening in their body.

What Kind of Symptoms Does CST help?

Craniosacral Therapy is not used to diagnosed or to fix.  Instead it is a listening of the Craniosacral System and how it affects the Nervous System and other cells, tissues, and organs so that the therapist can help ease things into a healthier dynamic motion.  People often feel much more relaxed, balanced and stronger after a session.   Sometimes, issues like migraines, concussions, fibromyalgia, tinnitus, headaches, anxiety, PTSD, back and neck pain, and other ailments clear up.  People with autism have experienced very positive results as well.   Quite often in fact.

Craniosacral Therapy is not massage.  You come in and stay fully clothed, and the therapist will examine your rhythm and perhaps, like me also check for visceral manipulation possibilities, lymhatic issues or some do add massage therapy.

What I recommend is that if you are seriously hoping to work with an experienced craniosacral therapist in the Columbus, Ohio area or anywhere else, check the Upledger site to see who is best certified and experienced.  There is a wide difference in education and experience.

If you have any further question, I’d like to answer them.  I offer a free 15 phone consultation at 614 653-8111.

I have a special promotion going on for the first session through the end of December, call and check it out!

Warmly,

Sharon Hartnett CST-D

3 Big Benefits of Receiving Structural Integration Therapy

3 Big Benefits of Receiving Structural Integration Therapy

Structural Integration Columbus

How Structural Integration Chose Me.

The miracles of fascia work.

Structural Integration really helped me when I was in my 30’s after having children. My body was so out of alignment, especially after carrying children on my hip and bending over so much. The smartest thing I did was to find a local Rolfer. After 10 sessions, I felt so much longer and spacious, I decided to study it with another local teacher, John Latz for 18 months.

When I lived in the Washington DC area, and Florida, I had a wonderful private practice where I did mostly Structural Integration for many years. Eventually though, as I began to get older, I decided to move more into the Craniosacral Therapy because it’s easier on the body. What I liked about this transition is that both consider the fascia and have similar benefit, but the technques are different. Also, neither are truly considered massage, but instead manual therapy with their own unique perspective to healing.

For about the last 15 years, I have lived in the Columbus, Ohio area, and my primary focus is the Upledger Craniosacral Sessions. However, I still take into account the perspective of structural integration and stacking the body in alignment with the efforlessness of gravity consideration. Also, by addressing imbalances in posture, through the series, even with a gentle approach, it helps to reduce strain on muscles, joints, ligaments and lends to comfort in daily living. By working with the fasica, both in SI work and Craniosacral Therapy, we can help release restrictions, and unzip the body into new possibilities.

Three benefits I see often are:

1.  More energy

2.  Better Balance

3.  Improved Circulation and Motion

I believe that fascia is an incredible system that is still being uncovered and understood.  However, therapist have known this for a long time.  We have witnessed the strength and power of change with the fascia over and over again.

As I stated, I no longer do primarily Structural Integration, but I do “integrate” it into my Craniosacral Work.  It’s much more gentle, and more inclusive with its attention on the Craniosacral System and the rhthym.  I do sort of a combination with the fascial awareness.  It’s all about letting go of stress can creating a better environment for healing.

If you would like to find out more about how I work, I do offer a free 15 phone consultation.   703 509-1792

Is A Head Massage Different Than Craniosacral Therapy?

Is A Head Massage Different Than Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapist Columbus

Head Massage Feels Great!

Imagine warm hands offering head massage after a stressful day. It feels wonderful creating better circulation and helping the soft tissues relax.

Even better though, when your head hurts, or you are suffering post concussion symptoms, Craniosacral Therapy is the better bet. In a Craniosacral Therapy session, you are going to have a Craniosacral Therapist listen to all the internal motions and work with the restrictions going on in your head, as well as your body at a much deeper level.

That’s right, an experienced Certified Craniosacral Therapist can listen and follow the patterns throughout the whole system by placing our hands in one place and listening intently. The amazing thing is the body shows us through the Craniosacral System where there is dysfunction and how to help achieve integration.

This is primarily done by noticing and working with the sutures and allowing our hands to follow the patterns and rhythm into releasing from superficially to the deeper issues.  This can be exceptionally helpful for people with migraines, headaches, and who have hit their head.

The gentle biomechanical light pressure we use, gives small nudges to create deeper flow throughout the brain. It’s almost like an unwinding of disconnected communication patterns inside the head.  Allowing more space and dialogue. Beyond this, it affects the whole body and nervous system through all the interconnections.  When the brain is feeling healthy, the body does as well.

Head Massage can feel great.  Especially if someone focuses on their massage this way and becomes an expert.  Comparatively, a Certified Craniosacral Therapy learns about the cranium, the mouthwork, the different parts of the brain and nervous system and more.  Helping to create better motion in the brain, and throughout the whole body by working with the craniosacral system can alleveiate so many challenging symptoms.  Truly, it helps the whole body to heal itself.

How to Relieve Tension Headaches?

How to Relieve Tension Headaches?

The Steady Ache of Tension Headaches

Find Relief:

  1. Stay Hydrated:  Dehydration can cause tension headaches.
  2. Get Rest:  Headaches can worsen without enough sleep.
  3. Meditate: It focuses and clears your mind.
  4. Scalp Massage helps to loosen the soft tissues on the head.
  5. Ice Your Tension Areas
  6. Cognitive Therapy can help you to Sort things out.
  7. Craniosacral Therapy-deep support for motion in the cranium.  This supports better motion and fluidity in the head.

If you are feeling that tightening pressure around your head, change what you are doing.  Tension headaches are usually patterns.  The good thing is that tension headache patterns can be broken.

As a Craniosacral Therapist, there have been times when I have worked with a person for 5 minutes and a 7 year old headache finally disappeared.  This isn’t always the case, but motion and nourishment can and often shift you right out of pain.

Quite often, clients who come in once a month after initial sessions end up feeling pain free.  It’s all about the fluids, the softness and giving the head and neck the ability to stay connected to the body.

Chronic Pain Getting You Down?

Chronic Pain throws a jolt into life, doesn’t it?

One of the most difficult things about chronic pain is that there is no break.  The body continually sends signals to the brain that say “OW”, and there is no rest on a physical level. If your chronic pain is lasting days, weeks or even months, you need some help. And if your chronic pain is coming from an illness level, it’s important that you seek medical help. In addition to that, naturopathic and/or functional medicine can also be very helpful in supporting an overall maintenance or health recovery.

What I would like to talk about is twofold.  The myofascial component of pain, and also how the mind reacts to pain.

  • Fascia-If there is inflammation in the body, it often affects the fascia as pain or dysfunction of some sort.  In the reverse, if the fascial body is tight, disorganized or unhealthy, it can also cause pain patterns. Because fascia interacts with all the living things in your body, it is important to address any myofascial issues that contribute to your chronic pain.  The problem is that most people have never even heard of fascia. So they go on medications and travel the traditional route looking for answers. Sometimes- the answers are there. Sometimes not. Mostly, in my practice I receive clients who have found no resolutions anywhere.  So what do we do?  We begin a dialogue between my hands and the person’s fascia.  The body tells me where to go.  Whether there are tight sheets, torques, pulls, resistance or whatever- we work there until the soft tissues start to melt and re-vigorate.  I look for more hydration, flexibility, motion and general health in the fascia.  When this happens, compression and dysfunctional patterns disappear, leaving more flow and energy to help self-correct the physical body.  The body eventually begins to feel more space and alignment, and voila- you can breathe again.
  • The Mind- It plays a huge part in how we respond to physical pain. It is true, that as human beings, we can suffer with physical pain.  But there are other things that can make pain worst. And usually, believe it or not- when we ignore our pain- the pattern usually gets worst.  Ignoring our bodies does not create better health. One thing that is helpful to do to relax pain patterns is to do a breathing meditation, Breathing with awareness helps to bring motion back into the body.  Motion is vitality. On top of that benefit, when we start to notice our thoughts, and beliefs, we become more empowered in understanding how our mind is organized. When we experience our bodies, with gentle awareness, pain often softens and can actually subside. As we question our unhealthy thinking, the mind expands, and so does the space inside of us.  I know,  that sometimes it is easier to resist the pain- but that really doesn’t help long-term.  Take some time each day to find the silence in the moment, the places in your body that are feeling good, or ask for loving kindness to fill you up.  The mind’s relationship to pain is important.  If you want to feel better, it is crucial that you start to explore other conscious choices.

I have worked with people on the table for close to 30 years. Chronic Pain is not the easiest thing to shift.  But with a holistic approach, I have seen people get better, and heal.  Looking at the foods you eat, your exercise schedule, how you think and act, along with your meditation practice can truly help.  Finding a person to journey with you and support you through modalities like SomatoEmotional Release can be life changing.

Remember,  that chronic pain can be a lonely place.  Don’t leave yourself in that position.  Get some help because your life is important.

Local Massage Therapist

Local Massage Therapist

Looking for a Local Manual Therapist to fit your unique issues?

The Columbus area is rather large.  So you can count on a drive to get the best services.I know there are some large Corporations with many locations that offer less expensive, newly licensed people for a monthly rate.   It’s hard to compete with that as a solo therapist.  But what you will often find with massage therapists who work on their own long-term, is that they have built their practice on experience and knowing the best tools to therapeutically help people to feel better.  We are still in business to stay because we offer the opportunity for real change and wellness.  There is no quick turnover until we find a better place to go.

And finding the best Maual Therapist for you is a big deal.  Each person has their reasons for wanting massage.  Perhaps it is a SPA fluff job.  But many people who are suffering and in pain actually prefer to be touched with expertise and good body listening and contact skills.  Nothing feels better than to know that familiar touch that knows how to release and support the body in its own healing process.  Building trust and a positive relationship over time, brings more awareness, self- empowerment, and better optimal alignment for movement.

I have been doing Manual Therapy for close to 20 years.  My work has evolved through many trainings and years of hands on application.  I am not going to go into all the techniques I employ, but will say, that as a Massage Therapist, I find great value and benefit in getting to personally know and understand what you are looking for as the primary objective.  And primary though myofascial therapy, craniosacral therapy- my intention is to work with you moment to moment through self-discovery, releasing, and helping you to meet your health goals.
