Bring Back Your Neck

Bring Back Your Neck

Young people and older people are getting forward neck posture. All the computers and the cell phones contribute greatly. But also all the sitting Americans do. It’s not good. If I had to do it again, I’d start squatting and learn yoga or pilates early on. I’d make them a life practice. But life being what it is in our culture- our postures are often misaligned as we get older. But there are things we can do to have more freedom of motion.

In my opinion, massage can help. But someone who specializes in fascia is the best bet. The fascia wraps around and through everything in the body superficially to the deep. From macro to micro and reversed. It’s a living tissue that contains and keeps us alive and in motion. When we nourish the fascia and help it remember its ability to be vital, pain can disappear.

I have clients in their 50’s and on up. They can hardly move their necks when they first come in. They are told it is arthritis. Well, they may have arthritis, but it’s the tissues that restrict or allow motion. It’s the fluids dancing with the structure that makes the change. If things can start to soften, spread and move, the bones can be adjusted or perhaps move back on their own. It’s like a wrapping. If it’s tight and stiff- how does life nourish or relinquish what it no longer needs?

Of course there are minerals, vitamins, PT and other things which can help (all part of the HELP team), but the fascia is key. People, whose doctors tell them it’s arthritis often don’t talk about the benefits of fascial work. I think this is a big mistake not including it in health protocols. In addition, learning Feldenkrais, Continuum and other movement exercises that are gentle can be essential and really help too. People don’t have to stay stuck or frozen internally. At any age, we can make choices that will help us. It may not correct the issue 100%, but it can make a huge difference.

Friends, move yourself in different ways. Be proactive with your health. We all have habits that aren’t easy to break, and when this happens- there is always someone out there with skill and experience who is willing to help. It may take time and patience. Take care-no matter which route you take.

Being Understood with Craniosacral Therapy

Being Understood with Craniosacral Therapy

Our names are a lable that identify us. I am not usually one who likes to be labeled. But there is something so vital about being witnessed, understood an heard that feels so important to our human nature. With Craniosacral Therapy, touch is also about melding and blending while listening to a person’s Central Nervous System. When the person is met, something alive and deeper awakens. It’s that place where we long to be recognized and finally are in a very sensory way.

Human beings are meant to be touched. Craniosacral Therapy is so gentle and compassionate. One reason I switched my main focus into Craniosacral Therapy was because it brought so much more peace to my system.

I see this all the time with my clients as well. It may take one session, or maybe many depending on the life circumstances. But it is oh so helpful in helping the body to deeply relax.

How Does Craniosacral Therapy Help Anxiety?

How Does Craniosacral Therapy Help Anxiety?

I could get into the physiology of the body to explain why Craniosacral Therapy helps alleviate anxiety. Instead, I want to talk about gentle touch and listening.

What I have noticed with many of my clients who have anxiety, is that often 1: They were not held much in safe arms. 2. They were in environments where there was lot of verbal and physical abuse. 3. They weren’t allowed to express how they felt. 4. Some type of abrupt trauma occurred.

Most of us have heard of the autonomic response of fight or flight? There is a chain reaction of many responses the body does to protect. And when there isn’t an opportunity to process stressful events, a person often holds the energy of the event/s that brought on the fear. What makes this even more difficult, is when the original issue is not cleared, the way a person interacts can create more examples and overlays of the fear and anxie

I think it’s important to ask- what was missing in those times of stress and fear?

Craniosacral Therapy directly addresses that question. First a therapist brings a neutral presence into a session. A place that feels safe and nurturing. Secondly, the therapist listens and melds with the person as they begin to move through a process that was left incomplete. This is done with gentle touch and care, along with techniques that work to balance the Craniosacral System (CSS). When the CSS is function well, it helps to balance the overly sympathetic Nervous System.

When someone is living with anxiety, it’s important to get grounded, to embody, and to feel safe again. This is done through a trusting relationship, that will bring you what was missing in the original situation where there was a real or perceived threat.

If you would like to find out more about how Craniosacral Therapy can help you-if you are experiencing high anxiety, PTSD, or panic attacks, call Sharon Hartnett for a free 15 minute phone consultation.

The Power of the Witness in Craniosacral

The Power of the Witness in Craniosacral

One of my teachers from the Upledger Institute Posted something about Witnessing, written by Dr. John Upledger. It made take some time to reflect on the how powerful this Craniosacral Therapy is simply by given this person on the table a witness. When he stay by the side of our clients, we bring our presence, our listening, and a person who can witness what may have been hidden in the dark for so long. The body holds cellular memory, and when the Craniosacral System is touched, it realties when it is being held in a sacred space with care. The body responds, and so do emotions and beliefs that arise as a result.

How many secrets need to come to light? And what would it feel like to trust someone who can touch us in a way that we can express all that has been hidden?

Craniosacral Therapists do this by staying neutral.

Post-Op Pain Relief

Post-Op Pain Relief

In my experience of 25 years in bodywork, I have noticed how my clients often experience significant decreases in anxiety, pain and tension after surgery. Controlled Trials have also found the same effectiveness with Hands On Therapies, from what I read in my Massage Therapy Journal. Whenever there are stresses in the body, that limits the healing process. Gentle listening and addressing the Nervous system to calm and work more easily can do wonders in Post-Op people in getting back to their lives. Craniosacral Therapy in particular is very gentle and supports the body to find it’s own intelligence to get well again.

Healing With Heart Energy

Healing With Heart Energy

Most of my practice is based in Craniosacral Therapy Work. I also went to the Barbara Brennan School of Healing for 8 years, and taught there, I have a strong foundation in Energy Healing, and it flows in every session. While Craniosacral Therapy is primarily about allowing the client’s system to navigate back to health, often in energy work, facilitators will see the aura or pick up things with their clients that could be helpful and shared. Quite often when my clients ask me what I see with my eyes open, it is a beautiful green light that is enveloping us both. The longer the connection, the more the color green becomes more and more clear. Also, in my heart, there is often a deep peace. My clients feel this as well.

Anyone can learn how to work with energy. You too if you are open. We are all Energy Beings. We are all Created in Love.

Taking Care of Feet with Plantar Fasciitis

Taking Care of Feet with Plantar Fasciitis

Planter Fasciitis involves chronic inflammation of the plantar fascia. If you want to find improved function, Myofascial Therapy along with stretching and better shoes can help reduce the pain. Because this condition is caused by repetitive tension, the sooner you address the issue, the better. Manual therapy can help, especially if addressed earlier rather than later, by increasing the flow of oxygenated blood to the area, softening the tissues and helping to restore structural integrity. This is done by working with the back of the legs and specifically on the foot. Many clients feel immediate relief, but the more severe the case, this may take months. Yet a high percentage of clients feeling more ground and at ease in their feet after manual treatment.

Love

The only way that you can remember who you are is by questioning your reality.  We have been taught so many things:  who we are supposed to be, how to act, what to say, what to believe-  but without all of this- who are you really? It's time to remember Love. It's...

A bit about Craniosacral Therapy Worthington…

Craniosacral Therapy is great for most everyone.  This work is so gentle and yet profound.  The focus is on working with the rhythm of the craniosacral system to look for and release restrictions that negatively impact the Central Nervous System. What I find the best results with are: trauma-releasing emotional blocks, back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, concussions and basically for decreasing stress. But I also have clients who enjoy experiencing more balance, vitality and overall better health after a few sessions.

I also offer myofascial therapy for structural issues.  I have been working with fascia for close to 20 years.

Concussion Health with Craniosacral Therapy Glial Work

A concussion is a traumatic type of brain injury that is impacted by some type of fall, blow or injury.

A concussion is not something to be taken lightly. I know. After treating many other people for concussions, I now am facing my own. I fell off my horse while landing on my buttocks and back, and also hit my head. Fortunately, I was wearing a good helmut. Since that time, I have rested quite a bit for the past two weeks, stopped most reading and writing, and took off even from the television for a bit. My doctor told me the best thing I could do is lay down in bed and close my eyes. I did the best I could, and it’s finally paying off. In the last few days, I have been applying some Craniosacral Therapy techniques to myself and have noticed an even better rate of improvement. Enough to think clearly and to write this short blog.

Fortunately, I did not lose consciousness, but I did lose my steadiness, and did get headaches for a while if I overdid it. I am so happy to be feeling better every day. Most people will fully recover from concussions, but others may not. Especially if there have been multiple incidents. So please take your health seriously. See a physician if you have any concerns that you have a concussion and make sure that self care is your priority.

Concussions

Craniosaral with a focus on Glial Cells

Craniosaral with a focus on Glial Cells

Craniosaral for a Concussion with a focus on Glial Cells
I am in the process of setting up some appointment with a peer who does Craniosacral Therapy but also a therapist who knows how to focus on working with the glial cells. Why the glial cells? Lately, it has become increasingly better understood that the glial cells play a very important role in the functioning of the brain. In a class that I recently took from Tad Wanveer (an Upledger.com) therapist and teacher, I learned that through light biomechanics intention, dialogue and touch, that an experienced therapist can create wonderful improvements in how the brain works. The way that Tad explains this in his book, “Brain Stars, glia illuminating craniosacral therapy,” The Glia is more than glue.  It is also plays an integral part in:

CNS development
Maintaining homeostasis
Supplying nutrients and oxygen
Synapse formation
healing injured neurons
sensory signaling
motor signaling
Cleansing of the CNS
Healing,
Production of the cerebrospinal fluid
Immune Response in the brain
Insulating
Flow regulation
Memory Processing
To destroy and Remove Waste
If the glia become over stressed or the environment in which they live- toxic, the CNS can be adversely toxic.

The good news is that the Glia can be touched and supported in a way that can repair and expedite the healing process.

As Tad says, ” Glial cells and neurons form and interdependent structural and functional system throughout the CNS that is fused with the Craniosacral System (CSS). This fusion ties place where glial cells attach to the pay matter membrane. The pain matter membrane in the innermost membrane layer of the CSS. It interconnects wit the other CSS membrane layers (meninges), and these layers connect to the bones of the cranium and spinal column. This bone to membrane to glial matrix is a dynamic biomechanical pathway CST practitioners cause use to help their clients correct nervous system dysfunction.”

In this class, I learned to touch into many parts of the brain and spinal cord. By listening and identifying through the different layers, one can come to appreciate the body’s innate ability to self-correct from a deep well of wisdom within. It is very possible to feel into structural and physiological restrictions and then to find a balance point for correction and to create better flow and drainage. In a more optimal environment, it is much easier for the brain and spine to heal.

It’s a bit ironic to me that my focus recently has been to work more and more with people who have concussions and TBI’s. And here I sit, healing with my own. But I feel very confident in the results I have had as a therapist with others, and also in my ability to work with myself, but also having incredible experiences from other therapists before. I know I am getting better, and this will resolve itself. I am back to working a light case load (craniosacral is not hard on the body or mind), and enjoying the miracles of interaction.

If you are feeling stressed about a concussion, please do take seriously that it is important to rest and heal. But I am here to tell you that there are some other integrative therapies that you docs may not know about. Craniosacral Therapy is an amazing hands on approach based on science, and experience that has helped countless others. At www.upledger.org you can see that the Upledger Institute has been helping football player to heal and feel better.

If you are local to the local Columbus area, and have a concussion, please give a call, and I am happy to offer a free 15 minute phone consult. Or look at www. upledger.com and find a Certified Therapist near you.

I can’t wait to get my hand’s on work ASAP!

SomatoEmotional Release CST

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is just what it means…

Somato means relating to the human body.

Emotional is characterized by intense feelings.

Release is freedom!

What is different about SomatoEmotional Release Work with Craniosacral Therapy that other therapies?

With Craniosacral Therapy, the therapist focuses on the myofascial tissues, but primarily on the Craniosacral Rhythm as a guide to help release restrictions in the body that maintain stress patterns. As we listen intently to the quality, symmetry, rate and amplitude of the rhythm, we ask the Inner Physician within to lead the way to self healing and self discovery.  This often leads us into disorganized energy and tissues, and possibly into a layer of emotions.  An experienced Craniosacral Therapist will then gently encourage its expression to release the body into more freedom and mobility. Many other types of possible therapy might be either massage or psychotherapy.  SER in particular, while it is not psychotherapy, allows for the mind, body and spirit to reconnect and bring more balance and awareness on many levels.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy Columbus

Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle type of therapy that focuses on connection with the central nervous system. Often people who are feeling overactive internally will feel quiet and calm. Others who feel lethargic pick up energy as they come closer to equilibrium. SER, with it full spectrum experiencing, gives space for the unfolding of blocked patterns into expression and presence.

If you feel like your emotions are stopping you from relaxing and enjoying your life, or that the tension in your body is causing pain, SomatoEmotional Release work may be just the right thing for you.
